Founded in 1965, Standard Machine® has steadily grown its facilities and capabilities — while also raising the standard for reliability.

Gary and Barb Porter originally founded Construction Machine in Saskatoon. The business grew quickly, moving its headquarters multiple times and expanding into Edmonton with SMS Gearworks. Through the 1980s, the company branched into gear cutting and grinding.

In 1991, the company developed a planetary gear system for JODTR, a rig for testing the joint of the Canadarm for the International Space System.

Later that decade, the business expanded into the gear reducers industry. In 1999, Gary and Barb formed a partnership between Standard Machine Ltd. and Hamilton Gear Ltd., and exited Standard Machine to focus on Hamilton Gear.

The 2000s saw the company consolidating its operations, forming an advisory board to expand its vision, and drastically expanding its facilities. In 2010, Standard Machine acquired Copperstate Industries Machine Works in Arizona to better serve US customers.

The Timken Company acquired Standard Machine in 2013, equipping the business to better provide comprehensive electromechanical solutions across Canada — and the world.
